I was raised on a family farm about 20 miles south of Portage and at the ripe old age of 19, enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate. After 27 years of active duty I retired from the Navy and after having a couple of jobs I found unfulfilling, decided that being retired would be a sound choice, but it didn’t take me long to get bored.
In 2012 while at Mass here in Portage, my Dad pointed out a notice in the bulletin looking for maintenance help and I applied the next week. I was very fortunate to be hired by the parish a few weeks later, and strive daily to do the best I can in order to serve the children, families, and parishioners of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. I am in charge of the physical condition and safety of all the parish and school grounds, cleaning and maintenance of the school, interfacing with various parish committees, and many other odd jobs which arise.
I mainly work in the school and the absolute best part is the interaction with all my “adopted” kids - they keep me young and always bring me great joy. I look forward to work every day because the children are entertaining, and the staff is some of the best you will find, showing uncommon dedication to the education and well-being of every person that they come in contact with. It is truly my honor to be a staff member of St. Mary parish.
