St. Mary Portage has an annual festival called BEST FEST that is held the weekend before Memorial Day each year. It is a community social event as well as our parish's largest fundraiser. The goal of this festival is to promote a sense of community, family, and fellowship throughout Portage. Many volunteers are needed to assist in different areas of the festival. You can be sure that you will have no trouble finding a spot to lend a hand. This event provides a place where everyone can gather, meet old and new friends and have fun.
FUNERAL LUNCHEON COMMITTEE
The Funeral Luncheon Committee consists of six groups, each group having two chairpersons. Each group is responsible for a two-month period. The funeral director contacts one of the chairpersons when there is a funeral. One of the chairpersons plans the menu with the family and orders the main food items. The other chairperson calls for help and for donations of food if necessary. The committee picks up the food from the grocery store, serves the food, and cleans up the kitchen and cafeteria. Each Funeral Luncheon Group has a list of regular workers who help them with the luncheon. In addition, there are usually family members and friends who bring in food for the luncheon. We are always ready to welcome anyone who would be able to help in any way, either as a worker or as someone who would be glad to donate a salad or dessert when needed.
PARISH OFFICE VOLUNTEER
There are times when volunteers are needed to assist with major parish mailings. The parish staff prepares the materials and volunteers are called in to finish the final steps before the mailing goes to the Post Office. These steps include folding and inserting materials into envelopes,sealing and putting on the address labels. A parish mailing consists of approximately 900 envelopes. Each mailing usually involves an hour or two of your time. We usually need six to eight volunteers for each mailing, so you are not expected to come each time. This is a great way to meet other parishioners and help the church.
When our parish secretary is away we are in need of someone to answer phones and assist those that stop in the parish office. Computer skills are preferred, but not required.
MEALS ON WHEELS
St. Mary Portage participates in the Meals on Wheels program, which is comprised entirely of volunteers from a number of churches within our community. As volunteers, they deliver meals, which are prepared at Tivoli, to those that have a hard time leaving their home due to injury, illness, or frailty. The program provides a nutritious meal to those who are unable to prepare one at the present time. Not only do they deliver the meal, the volunteers provide a warm hello, smile, and a bit of conversation to those receiving the meals. St. Mary Portage is responsible for delivering meals one week out of every six weeks (M-F). You can volunteer one day or all five days during that time. We are always looking for couples, runners, and drivers.
The St. Mary, Portage Gala Auction is typically held every other year on a Saturday evening in November. The event includes food and drink along with a live and silent auction. We need assistance with picking a theme, decorating, designing invitations, gathering door prizes and auctions items, and much more! This event benefits both the parish and school.
